Tea? 2000s
Tea? 2000s is from the Tea? series. It depicts the tradition of enjoying a cup of tea and biscuits with a friend and sitting down together for a conversation to catch up with each other’s news. This can be an important emotional support system and is an invaluable part of our culture.
For the 2000’s I chose the first smart tablecloth I bought for my dining table, a traditional white damask pattern, popular in the early 2000s. I still have this cloth as I don’t subscribe to the throwaway culture that is so prevalent today, also known as a hoarder! The Damask was fun to capture, for people interested in the technical aspect of my work, I experimented with light texturing to replicate the damask weave in this cloth.
The china is from Wheel and Barrow, plain white china, as patterns and bright colours are a thing of the past, I think the decisions around choosing a pattern or colour in a world where our attention is constantly distracted by our mobile devices and the constant stream of bright imagery they provide at our fingertips, become an overwhelming problem.
The results is a desire for plain, bland neutral colours, reducing the need for difficult decisions and providing a calm quiet colour palette in our homes. The biscuits are Vienna biscuits with a white chocolate topping and white chocolate Tim-Tams
